Dorito’s Competition

So in my previous blogs I’ve kind of been talking about general things like equipment that you need and some options that videographers have to work. Now I want to use a specific example from one of our assignments in the past. Specifically the Facebook assignment. I remember coming across an advertisement for Doritos that would have used a videographer.

On Doritos Facebook page they post a bunch of their advertisements that people who follow their page can see. So the video shows Dinklage in a hot and cold “war” with Morgan Freeman. It starts off with Dinklage in his fire lair talking or rapping about his Doritos Blaze. Then it transitions to Morgan Freeman killing all the fire with ice. This is to show his product that he is saying is better, the Mountain Dew Ice drink.

The important part about a videographers job is to tell a story and tell it well. The thing that made that video commercial so impactful was that it did not only have some well-known famous actors in it, two products that are fairly new but enticing, and a well shot video. The actors are in clear view, very sharp and in focus. That is very important. The cuts are very clean and there were close ups and medium shots to make the video more interesting.

I know this may seem like something that is small and unimportant, but it matters a lot to the people who you are making your product for. Even if random people may not appreciate the hard work that goes into making those commercial videos or normal videos, just know that the people you work for do. And they are the ones paying you anyways.

  1. Videography is so important. I oftentimes find myself watching a movie, show or commercial only for the beautiful cinematography. A good story, editing, lighting, etc. are also important, but you are correct, without a great videographer, the story is dead in the water.

  2. The art of being good at one’s craft is what makes everything worth it. I have taken a few videos and when I put them together there is always a part of me that is disappointed in my work because it does not convey the message so clearly.
